Professor Ian Hargreaves said in the report he submitted to British Government in May 2011: “Could it be true that laws designed more than three centuries ago, with the express purpose of creating economic incentives for innovation by protecting creators’ rights, are today obstructing innovation and economic growth? The short answer is: yes.”
Copyright Law, which was made in the context of the the 18th century with tangible resource market and technology, becomes a trouble-maker once we enter the Internet and digital era.
Intangible works, unlike tangible ones, are nonrivalrous1) and nonexcludable2). It is meaningless to exclusively own content written media and restrict others’ uses in intangible resources.3) The tragedy of the commons does not happen in intangible resources. The statement that copyright equals to restriction, and restriction equals to exclusive does not apply to them.
Now, people create new values through sharing rather than spending costs on controlling and restricting intangible resources.
Loftwork in Japan lets designers to openly distribute their illustrations and digital contents for free, and raise funds by selling their products or organizing individual projects. MIT OpenCourseWare shares their lecture videoes and curriculums, and that naturally promotes the school and attracts talented students from around the world. YEIZON project, rather than just ordinary pop music, creates real music that other artists can jump in and freely remix. Flickr makes its users to share high resolution images and enjoy others reuse their works. Wikipedia creates the world’s largest encyclopedia by crowdsourcing. Innovators are making great commons for new creation in various areas, even at this moment.
Today, we will take a look at how sharing culture is influencing new creation and innovation by reviewing the meaning of Creative Commons movement which allows copyrighted works to be reused by others, and the cases of Creative Commons innovations in many different areas.
