This study focuses on the daily life of residents in Qingdao and Huiquan beach from 1901 to 1936, when it controlled by subsequent three foreign and internal regimes, Germany, Japan and Guomindang(國民黨) government.
The bay of Huiquan, located in the east of Qingdao old downtown, transformed itself into modern public space under the colonial rules. Especially Huiquan beach not only represented the showcase of western culture of modernity but also encouraged national sentiment for the Qingdao people.
Huiquan beach was established in 1901 as the first public beach of Qingdao during the German occupation. When German developed Huiquan beach, they gave priority to sanitary and vocation. Huiquan beach was close to the downtown, becoming a resting place for Germany and foreign tourists. But the German Government General of Qingdao did not allow to entrance of common Chinese, so Beach had not very much to do with daily life of residents in Qingdao.
After occupying Qingdao in 1914, Japan admitted the entrance of the common Chinese to the beach. After it became a resting place for citizens exhausted from daily life and also worked as a park. When the Japan Government General of Qingdao administered Huiquan Beach, it emphasized of modern public order including women"s swimsuit.
Since the rule of Guomindang, Huiquan Beach have very much to do with daily life of residents in Qingdao. In the 1930s to Qingdao people Huiquan beach became to learning space of modern life and public order, space of modern leisure, and space of understanding of colonial realities.
