This paper discuss on a condition of the subaltern’s consciousness and utterance in Han, Su-San’s Floating Weeds(『부초』). Floating Weeds is one of the bestseller novels in the late of 1970’s in Korea, which has sensible style of Han, su-san’s own and interesting material for novel about the circus. The circus and acrobats are considered as the subaltern and subaltern group. Acrobats have past unhappy and handicap, or sad destiny, so they can not have a family nor normal social life. They are poor souls who have the interiority of the sorrow.
The writer experienced the circus about 2 years in the real circus group. He learned their words, and transferred it into novel language. In the consideration on the their subalternity, acrobats’ utterance must be institutionalized by inner writer’s narration. Their language was focused on formation of interiority which made by the sorrow. However acrobats utterance are formated by two points, the first is what made by the maxims, the second is subaltern’s literacy. character’s expression combined with new information from the outside of narrative in the bounds of oral literacy. The Utterance combined in maxim of literacy and the interiority represent the sorrow
At the same time, the sorrow was connected with the external conditions which is the industrialization of Korea in 1970’s. According to the industrialization, circus could not adapt to the new industrialization environment, not win competition against TV and movies. So they realized why fall into the subaltern. And they accept the decline of circus and their life as destiny.
Floating Weeds which is combined with external conditions and inner emotion can review in the view of moral norms and personal ethics. When the compositive interiority of subaltern demand new moral norms not to fall down in the fateful resignation. So Yunjae who is most wise character suggest the loyalty and the national consciousness as moral norms, and acrobats replied his suggestion.
Finally discourse on the popular circus was brought up by the rest. Their conclusion was that the current circus is capitalistic mode only for profit, not for the people. So from now, korean circus must be the popular circus influenced form traditional acrobatic performance.
