Based on Ch’unhyang-ga by Jang Ja-Beak, literatures, paintings, and artifacts, the characteristics of men’s costumes in the latter period of Joseon and the characteristics of description in the song are summarized in this paper.
Jang Ja-Beak (1852 - unknown) is a desciple of Kim Se-Jong and is a master singer for the eastern style of Pansori. He had been very famous for the Song of Byun-Kang-Shoi and Ch’unhyang-ga during the period of King Cheol-Jong and King Ko-Jong. Ch’unhyang-ga by Jang Ja-Beak, first introduced in 1987 by Kang Han-Young, is thought to be a manuscript made in 1865 or in 1925.
Characteristics of the description in Ch’unhyang-ga by Jang Ja-Beak can be summarized as follows:
First, the song begins with the praise for the glory of the King Sook-Jong, but it mentions costumes of the period between the mid 18th century and the 19th century. Second, the song brings us a new understanding on the costume terminology, wearing methods, and other related items. Third, more descriptions on men than women are given. Especially, many props such as mang-guen, kwan-ja, dong-got, and pouches for low class men are described in the song in exaggerative fashion. We can guess that the exaggerated description is for the listeners who were mainly low class men. Fourth, when the costume for a person is described, only some characteristics are focused. Therefore, in order to understand the whole picture, some understandings on the costume for different classes are required. Finally, there exist some inconsistencies in descriptions on some costumes.
