This article is intended to analyze the desire and existence specific to middle-class family, by analyzing "Swaying Afternoon" by Park Wan-Suh written in 1970"s. 1960"s may be coined as a period of "poverty community" to break out from absolute poverty. Meanwhile, 1970"s was a period of learning a new way of life in keeping distance to traditional life, due to industrialization and economic growth. So, 1970"s was a period of conceiving desires and ways for becoming a middle-class family. From this point of view, this article first made overview of the cause of anticipatory anxiety in middle-class family originated from Korean War. This article highlighted that the big Other - bourgeoisie of middle-class family required to be authorized as a middle-class family is missing, and that such family is imagined and structure by the vague symbol of the big Other as non-existence of the tradition of bourgeoisie. Also the meaning of the failure of ascending in the class and the difference of snobbism between parenthood and their children were analyzed. Lastly, Huh Sung"s suicidal was described as a difficulty of proving the middle-class dignity. The suicide highlighted the contradiction of the existence of middle-class family to distinguish themselves from the falsity. Park Wan-Suh"s novel typically described the specific desire and mechanism of the formation of middle-class family.
