In Edo period, citizens of various social classes could go on a Tabi on their own, utilizing the organized transportation system. As the result of the rapid advance of the economy of the nation in Genroku period (1688∼1704), a big portion of the population was able to go on Tabi with various purposes, from religious temple worship or pilgrimage to therapy in hot springs.
Bakuhu’s political stance, on the other hand, included the national isolation policy. The only place available for foreign visitors was Nagasaki, and that was limited only to Chinese and Dutch visitors. In that period, the only trip that a foreigner could go on was Sampu to Edo to be presented in front of Bakuhu’s Shougun. So, the Sampu group could go on a long Tabi from Nagasaki to visit Edo, but they were forbidden to form unnecessary contact with Japanese people. The main examples of foreigners who went on Tabi were Kaempfer, Thunberg, and Siebold. They arrived in Japan in different era, but they are all same in the way that they were doctors in Dutch trading house, followed chiefs of trading house on EdoSampu, and left written records about the trip.
This dissertation is about 『EdoSampuRyokounikki』 of Kaempfer, and the texture will be focused on his Tabi in Edo period under the influence of national isolation policy. Kaempfer arrived in Nagasaki in 1690, followed on two Edosampu, and left Japan in 1692. The broad research material was published as 『The History of Japan』 after his death, and the book was used by the western people as the standard material to understand Japan for a long period of time. 『EdoSampuRyokounikki』 is the translated version of the EdoSampu section of 『The History of Japan』, and Kaempfer’s Tabi experience is described in detail. So this dissertation will use 『EdoSampuRyokounikki』of Makoto Saitou as the main text, first to comprehend the periodic and social characteristics of Japan, and then to examine Kaempfer’s view on Tabi.
