The purpose of this study was to examine ssireum-related articles published in domestic academic journals in between 1970 and 2013 in an attempt to provide information on the right directions and revitalization of ssireum research. Three search websites for academic journal articles were used to select ssireum-related academic journal articles: the RISS of Korea Education &; Research Information Service, the KISS and the DBpia. And 187 articles that were published in academic journals in between 1970 and 2013 were selected and analyzed by year, subjects, field research type, research theme, instrument, instrument usability and statistical analysis method. As a result, it’s found that there was an increase in the number of the studies on ssireum in and after the late 1990s. Many of the studies investigated men, college students and sport players and were concerned with exercise physiology, the history of physical education and psychology. Descriptive, experimental and analytic studies were prevailing, and many examined athletic performance and made use of measuring tools or inventories. The studies that were conducted in and after 2010 and used instruments provided information on reliability and validity. Finally, the most widely used statistical analysis methods were t-test and ANOVA, followed by descriptive statistics and correlation/regression analyses. In conclusion, lots of the ssireum-related studies took historical approaches, but the cross-sectional quantitative studies that investigated sport players were widespread. The usability of instruments was mentioned, but there wasn’t enough information on sphericity assumption and missing values. In the future, information on missing values should be provided when a statistical analysis is made, and how to verify sphericity assumption should be taken into account. Besides, more diverse sorts of ssireum research should be implemented such as long-term longitudinal studies.
