The soccer games in Gando’s Korean society developed into a village event, a school event, and then a district event, and eventually became a national event. This indicates that the soccer game strengthened the national identity of these Koreans. Such development of the soccer events in Gando’s Korean society from the mid-1920s to the mid-1930s implies both the political situation the Koreans in Manchuria faced and the reaction they showed against it. The foothold of the development was the school sports events that began in 1910. The school athletic event was for villagers as well as for students, and gave birth to games like soccer matches. With the heat of the sports events leading to the development of sports matches, those games solidified the identity of groups which were comprised of players and cheering squads. Reflecting the politics in Manzhouguo, the soccer matches in a school and a village took on a political movement, and this in turn raised the temperature of the games. As the students graduated, they formed groups such as youth associations, and these associations organized sports events, and then a group specializing in athletic games was born: an athletic association. This association then organized sports events on a larger scale, resulting in forming the identity of a district beyond schools and villages. The identity of the district was none other than the ethnic identity in Gando where most of the citizens were Koreans. Through soccer matches, Koreans in Gando could imagine ethnicity beyond their region. This is also why Korean players came to the front in Manchuria’ s world of soccer.
