Youth theatre is less active than children and adults theatre in South Korea. Thus, play texts for adolescents are not readily available. Consequently, such shortage of play texts brings about inactive performance of youth theatre. This writing argues for the creation of play text of youth theatre to activate youth theatre. In order to explore the case to create youth theatre play text, this writing examines ‘play writing incubating project’ of research center for children and youth theatre of NTCK(national theatre company of Korea). Analysing ‘The box’, ‘Hellow,’ and ‘A rags to riches story’ project in conjunction with three previous performances which have been already staged by this research center, this writing examines the process of creation and the characteristics of creation. Based on this examination, it will provide alternatives.
The most conspicuous trait is that the project involves adolescents in the process of creation of play text. It selects adolescent students from either theatre class of high school or voluntaries of alternative school. To produce play texts, ideas and examples from participating adolescents’ improvisation and dramatic play are used by play writers in constructing play texts. Then, the written play texts are examined by adolescents and concerned people through reciting texts.
In this process, there are several problems identified. When the texts are recited, audiences’ thoughts are not precisely organised, collected and reflected. Another problem is that this project is merely one of many that the research center has attempted to do. In this case, continuity are preferred over one off trial. Since following actions may well produce advanced methods, this continuity seems to work for the better.
This study points out the problems of creation which is need to be tackled. Besides it pinpoints that the following actions should be provided to activate the creation of play texts for youth theatre. One of following actions can be to stage the recital of play texts and offering written play texts to people.
