This research aims at an analysis of Lyuh Woon Hyung’s understanding and method of reunification. He led establishment and reunification movements after the Liberation of Korea. Which way did he choose for reunification in the situation of the tragic division of the Korean peninsula after the Liberation of Korea? He argued about reunified independence.
His argument was that, First, Liberation of Korea in 1945 was incomplete. The fulfillment of liberation of Korea is to make Korea reunified and self-determined. Second, the mass party which Minjung govern in democratization of economy has to lead and realize reunification. Third, after forming Left-Right Coalition, it need to make use of foreign powers for reunification of Korea.
But his argument about reunified independence of Korea was frustrated because of people’s political immaturity, foreign powers’ interference, and the left and right’s factional conflicts. And the death of Lyuh Woon Hyung made his argument forgotten.
Today, what does his argument mean for us? Though his argument was not realized but I think it is still valid under the situation of upsurges of South-North conflict and of foreign powers as violent capital. It is because national self-determined reunification which Minjung lead is only the way to fulfillment of reunification of Korea.
