This study reinterprets the soteriology of Hans Urs von Balthasar’s Theo-Drama in constructive dialogue with literary discourse of tragedy focusing on the notion of harmatia. While the term is used in the New Testament to denote sin, it signifies tragic error/flaw in judgment of a hero in tragedy. We excavate its complicated semantic usages deployed in Greek and Shakespeare’s tragedies in order to explore how it could illuminate the entire stages of theo-drama: creation, the fall, and the Christ event, (incarnation, death, and resurrection), and eschatology. In doing so, this notion is also used as a lens to reexamine the relationship of the two trinitarian Persons (Father/Son) via the mediation of the third Person (Spirit). The hamartia of the Trinity is conceived not as fatal flaws as in the case of tragic heroes but as fatal love demanded for redeeming tragic human existence in the drama of salvation. The thrust of our argument is that this trinitarian hamartia compelled by fatal love signifies the pathos of the Trinity disclosed in the drama of salvation, in which tragic hu man existence is overcome by the tragic death of Christ. Now in this post-Christ era the tragedy of human existence is an already-overcome tragedy, but it is still a yet-to-be-overcome tragedy in the eschatological hope of catharsis, as his resurrection ushered in the phase of tragi-comedy in the drama of salvation. Teasing through the rich semantic nuances of hamartia in tragedy, this study, we hope, could open up new fertile possibilities of rethinking the entire loci of constructive theology: soteriology, Christology, the Trinity, and eschatology, among others. We also hope that this work, in its exploration of constructive dialogue between theology and tragic literature/drama, could contribute to enriching the resources of theology and broadening its horizon.
