This thesis attempt to clarify the characteristics of compositional structure in Lee Mun-Gu’s roman cycles. In his life Lee Mun-Gu wrote the three works 〈Gwanchon Essay〉 〈Our Neighborhood〉 〈My Body Was Kept Too Long Standing or Walking〉 that were categorized the roman cycles. R. Jakobson adopted the two concepts of the metaphor and the metonymy to explain the combining method of language. Accepting this Jakobson’s linguistic concept toward the literary terms is useful to classify this works and to analyze the compositional principal of the roman cycles.
The work 〈Gwanchon Essay〉 described the homesickness by figuring the characters that had an effect to the process of main character’s growth. The narrator evaluated or judged the persons on the ambivalent criteria that were derived from grandfather and father’s view of life. The work 〈Gwanchon Essay〉 was structured according the metonymic composition based on the contiguity as a integrating rule. His work 〈Our Neighborhood〉 figured rural livings destroyed under the policy of industrialization in 1970-80’s. 〈Our Neighborhood〉 took the panoramic structure for describing the customs of agricultural villages. This work was structured according the metaphorical composition based on the similarity and selection.
Lee’s work 〈My Body Was Kept Too Long Standing or Walking〉 showed the decline of roman cycle drawn from the fusion of twofold compositional method. This mixed-structure of roman cycle located intermediate stage of the two kinds of former works. He didn’t create the roman cycle any more and sought to write the novel. Lee’s works demonstrate a transitional phenomenon of roman cycle in time and genre dimension.
