This paper tries to contrast and compare with the meaning usage and substitution relationship of Korean verbs “끊다” and “자르다” which correspond to Japanese cutting verbs “切る” “?つ” and “絶つ” Through this study, it is found that Japanese “切る” subsumes a variety of meanings such as “separate out more than two things,” “cut off something hanging on a human body,” “partially hurt,” “kill,” “open the covered things,” “eliminate the relationship of human beings or things,” “block the flow of electricity,” “interrupt someone"s speech.” In addition, “?つ” signifies that “stop the matter in progress,” “block the flow of a matter,” “close the matter,” while “絶つ” indicates “make no progress the continuing matter” and “completely eliminate.” With regard to the Japanese verbs, Korean verb “끊다” signifies “divide into more than two things,” “interrupt someone"s speech,” “stop the matter in progress,” “block the flow of a matter,” “make no progress the continuing matter,” “completely eliminate,” “conclusion of habitual actions,” while Korean verb “자르다” means “divide into more than two things,” “cut off something hanging on a human body,” “partially hurt,” “kill,” “block the flow of a matter,” “be cut off” and “dismiss it employees.” In this respect, it becomes evident that both Japanese and Korean cutting verbs share remarkable similarities. For the corresponding and substitution relationship of the cutting verbs, please refer to the diagram of this paper"s conclusion.
