A various stories about General Kim, Sung-woo have been conveyed in oral and in documents that he was a local military leader in Boryeong fighting against invasion of Japanese pirates to secure the area in fourteenth to fifteenth century, the end of Goryeo dynasty. Then, he was settled in Boryeong and formed an influential family according to the stories. Regrettably, however, it was not mentioned in a reliable historical record such as "The History of Goryeo" that he repelled Japanese pirates in Boryeong area. Because of this, there has been a controversy surrounding the later records about Kim, Sung-woo and the credibility of word of mouth.
This research reviews the performance of Kim, Sung-woo repelling Japanese pirates and his life settled in Boryeong area with empirical approach. The records of Kim, Sung-woo appears in his tombstone, nationwide and local geographical materials in the late Joseon dynasty and his family materials. Though a historical record about him could not be found in official publications, it is recognized as a historical fact that Kim, Sung-woo was the one who played in the battles repelling Japanese pirates. Based on this, it can be argued that the operation against Japanese pirates in Boryeong area has a sound basis. The reason why his name did not appear in the official record of Goryeo history, "The History of Goryeo" is assumed because he was on the opposite political position to the force of new dynasty founded by Lee, Sung-gye.
I believe this paper secured a supportive historical basis in part. However, it cannot be argued that all the historical records about him reflect the historical facts as those were. Because of this, the issue of credibility in posterity records needs to be examined continuously.
