The purpose of this article is to examine and apply the message of Galatians in the face of contemporary challenges of heretical doctrine to our faith. The opponents(“Judaizer") in Galatians taught that Gentiles who wanted to become Christians should be circumcised and
commit themselves to living in accord with the Torah. That is, the crucified Christ is insufficient for them. To dispute the teaching of the opponents and alert it"s danger to Galatians, Paul wrote the letter to Galatians. The general outline of the letter of Galatians consists of the origin of the Gospel(갈 1:6-2:15), the nature of the Gospel(2:16-4:31) and lives of the Gospel(5:1-6:10). After a customary salutation (1:1-5), Paul immediately declares his astonishment that the Galatians are deserting God and embracing a false message that perverts the gospel of Christ(1:6-9). Chapter 1 he defends his apostolic authority in other to explain origin of the Gospel which he preached Galatians. Chapters 2-4 he deal with the question whether one is made right with God by doing works of the law or by trusting in Jesus Christ(2:15-21). Especially, Chapter 3 exhorts the Galatian believers to stand fast in the faith as it is in Jesus, and to abound in the fruit of the Spirit. Chapters 5 and 6 teach about the right use of their Christian freedom. Here Paul emphasize its paradoxical fulfillment in loving service rather than in self-indulgence(5:1-15). He identifies the outcome and evidence of true freedom with the fruit that the Holy Spirit bears in people whose lives have been transformed by God"s grace(5:16-25).
we can apply the message of Galatians to today" situation of heresy. first, we should judge all heretics only by the criterion of Bible. Second, one"s salvation can be obtained only “though Jesus Christ". Third, the life of christians must be done not only according to the principle “freedom from", but also according to principle “freedom for" and be lived with the Holy Spirit.
