The purpose of this study was to examine the development of children’s belief of wish. It was carried out for 96 children at their age 4 and 6 from four kindergartens and nurseries in D city. The adaptation of the tests Woolley and his colleague(1999) devised, such as actual entity tasks, teaching tasks, judgement tasks, interviews, prediction tasks, trick box tasks, were asked. The frequencies appeared in the tests of whether to process wishing ability, the reason for the possession of the ability of wishing, the elements of wishing process, their belief of the effect of wishing and the background of the belief of the effect of wishing by each age group were χ²-test and the average difference in the scores of the belief of the effect of wishing was t-test. The results of this study ware as follows : First, there was no difference in the development of the belief by each age, but, 6-year-olds considered various abilities including mental process for the reason for whether to wish, more than 4-year-olds. Secondly, differences by each age in eye-closing, thinking, seeing and wanting as elements necessary for wishing appeared and 4-year-olds answered significantly that they didn’t need eye-closing behavior unlike 6-year-olds.
Thirdly, 6-year-olds appeared to be more skeptical than 4-year-olds were in the belief of the effect of wishing. Fourthly, 4-year-olds appeared to attach the belief of the effect of wishing more to magical context than 6-year-olds. Belief of wishing is a unique children’s way of thinking and at the same time it can also be viewed as the lack of their understanding of mental-physical causalities, and the extent of the belief of the effect of wishing decreased and the of their belief got more based on the magical as age higher.
