As a leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Germany, Willy Brandt instigated a culture of democratic debate and an open political forum for new social forces and radicalized younger generation in the 1970s ’80s. Their political desires for social emancipation and criticism of historical culture were in accord with the Brandt’s communicative leadership as a former anti-Nazi resistance fighter. Brandt’s idea of democratic socialism was based on the belief that liberty can be only achieved with social equality and expanding democratization in all sectors of society.
Before the Treaty of Warsaw in 1970 that guaranteed German acceptance of the new borders of Poland, Brandt made a gesture of humility and penance for the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto. Having shown his ability to settle the critical border issue and to take responsibility for displaced EastGermans, Brandt indicated that in order to achieve unification of East and West Germany, discretion and patience rather than heroic action or superficial diplomacy was required. The secret of Willy Bandt’s success as a peace politician lay not only in his "small step policy" and pragmatism of his Ostpolitik, but also in values and virtues, such as deliberation and authenticity, trust and reliance, and a sense of reality.
