This paper reviews and introduces research on the Sakhalin Korean diaspora issues in Korea and Russia. To review the research trends about important issues in history regarding Sakhalin Koreans, this paper examines and compares 250 relevant theses, research papers, and academic articles published in South Korea and Russia from the 1960s to 2011. Important findings are summarized.
In South Korea, the research about Sakhalin Koreans may be divided into three divisions: forced mobilization, the issue of repatriation, and resettlement in their historical homeland. These classifications have as background the fact that researcher on Sakhalin Koreans was not an immigrant the immigration history, which formed over a long period of time, and recently appeared from imperialism and Japanese colonial rule in Korea. In other words, it is the direct result of the chronicle survey on problems of Sakhalin Koreans.
In comparison, the issues of the Sakhalin Koreans in Russia remained just as the problems of minority groups. Then in the 1990s, individual researchers started to show interest in this theme. Recently, the interest in the history of the Korean diaspora and the lives of Koreans in Sakhalin tends to increase with the diverse trends of research on local history.
