This study is aimed at identifying how travel behavior is associated with travel frequency for regional railways in the Seoul metropolitan area. Regional railways are expected to play an important role in dealing with the demand of medium or long distance for travel. Few studies have focused on its travel behavior and frequency from the perspective of individual level. Using personal travel survey data conducted for the residents living near total 11 regional railway stations, the study analyzed its association effects on the travel frequency of regional railways. The linear regression models are finally adopted as analysis methodology, after diagnosing both multi-collinearity among and endogenicity of independent variables.
Analysis results are summarized as below. First, access distance to a regional railway from home has a non-linear function on travel frequency. Despite it, residential location within a walkable distance is the strongest impact on the frequency of ridership. Second, the travel demand for regional railway more increases in the areas where stations are located outside Seoul. Third, determinant factors to facilitate the use of regional railway for commuting is more influential than them for the other travel purposes such as shopping and leisure in inducing its demand.
