The two recent petitions from The Society for Textbook Revise (STR) to remove references to evolution from high-school textbooks have come close to winning in Korea. STR is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACR) which has been strongly supported by the mainstream Protestantism in Korea for the past thirty years. Korean mainstream Protestant Christians have been trying to push their specific theistic view into the realm of science. Why do they reject evolution groundlessly and want to be science eventually? The reason is not just the poor education of evolution. They have misunderstood evolutionary theories and accepted an antagonistic relationship between science and religion. In addition, they have received a distorted view on the nature of science. In this paper, I criticise Korean mainstream Protestant Christians’ view on evolution in terms of evolutionary biology, ‘science and religion’, and philosophy of science, reviewing STR’s petitions and its movement.
