The purpose of this paper is to examine conservative Protestantism’s response toward social problems such as poverty and social disparity since the 1997 IMF crisis in Korea. This study focuses on the Salvation Army and the ‘righteous riches’ teachings in the conservative circle of Korean Protestantism. Although the individualistic Salvation Army historically avoided engaging in the political realm of transforming social structures, it was active in helping the homeless people caused by the 1997 IMF crisis in the country. Asserting that all people bear dignity and are equal to God, the Salvation Army is trying to build the Kingdom of God one person at a time. In the meantime, the close relationship between the middle-class dominating Protestantism and the newly emerging ‘prosperity gospel’ in contemporary Korean society attests a social transformation from aristocracy to meritocracy. This study deals with the thesis with reference to the ‘righteous riches’ teachings by Reverend Dong-Ho Kim of God’s Will Soongeui Church in Seoul. The study suggests that Reverend Kim’s conservative view on the poor and the rich is not a new perspective but only a Korean version of American prosperity gospel devoid of a keen consciousness on social justice. The favorable popularity of the ‘righteous riches’ teachings among the middle class reveals that the status quo ideology regarding the issue of social inequality is preponderant in Korean conservative Protestantism which has a legacy of American Biblical literalism. The conclusion of the paper suggests the so-called ‘progressive Pentecostalism’ (in Donald Miller’s words) which combines spirituality and social commitment for building the social credence of present Korean Protestantism as a whole.
