In Korea, the original terms of Western music have been based on English and German since the 1880s when Western music was firstly introduced into Korea. If there is a difference in English and German musical terms indicating the same kind of key, their different translation will sometimes result in serious complications.
The English and German music terms indicating two different kinds of keys, such as a key with the same key note and a key with the same key signature, are four terms which include Parallel Key and Gleichnamige Tonart, and Relative Key and Paralletonart. They are translated and used as Byeonghaengjo Naranhanjo, Gateum Eutteumeumjo, Gwangyejo, and Byeonghaengjo Naranhanjo in Korean.
The use of two different terms for the same kind of key has its own difficulty, and the dual meaning of Byeonghaengjo Naranhanjo will inevitably cause major problems in using music terms. Both the Parallel Key in English (key with the same key note) and Paralleltonart in German(key with the same key signature) are translated as Byeonghaengjo Naranhanjo in Korean. As a result, the Byeonghaengjo Naranhanjo in Korean can indicate not only a key with the same key note, but also a key with the same key signature.
Instead of Byeonghaengjo Naranhanjo, the term indicating a key with the same key signature in the Korean basic music theory books used for college, if either Gateun Jopyojo, a new term for a key with the same key note, or Gwangyejo a translation of English Relative Key is used, it will be possible to resolve the problem of the complication arising from the dual meaning of Byeonghaengjo Naranhanjo.
