Over the last few decades, consistent effort to reduce the major cause of global warming, carbon emission, has been made in many areas. Since the transportation sector has been identified as one of main contributor to the issue, tremendous effort has been made to replace conventional vehicles with low or zero carbon emission vehicles such as hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric and fuel cell vehicles. In the area of mass transportation application, similar efforts are made. However, typical electric bus with a fixed battery system has a critical limitation of battery recharging time due to the limited energy density of the battery to be used as a inner-city transportation system. Therefore, as an alternative, a smart electric bus with a swappable battery system integrated with a quick top pick-up (QTP) has been developed and discussed in this paper. While there are number of core systems to make the smart electric bus system to function harmoniously and flawlessly, in this paper, a focus has been made to present the details of the battery swapping mechanism which would resolve the major issue of long battery charging time by simply swapping an energy depleted battery with a fully charged battery at a quick change machine (QCM). Also, the communication protocol between the QTP and the QCM is presented as well to promote the better understanding of the fully integrated solution. The QCM is strategically located along the bus route for convenience. At the end of the discussion, plans for future development are provided as well.
