This study intends to examine the nationalist movement in the area of Mungyeong, focusing on the socialist movement in the 1920s. First of all, this study examines the changes in the characteristics of social movement organizations and their aspects in the area of Mungyeong as ideological organizations followed socialism. The research of these activities led to the characteristics of the nationalist movement in the area of Mungyeong in the 1920s.
Socialism emerged in Korea as an ideology which would promise the liberation of the nation, its classes and human beings from the darkest colonial period of Korean history. While socialism was accepted and modified, this ideology disseminated into regional areas without any filtration. The northern part of Gyeongbuk Province including Mungyeong was a place which absorbed socialism relatively quickly and played a role in the social movement. In other words, this area was a test ground preparing the theoretical framework for each socialist faction in Korea. Socialists who were trained in this area were sent to various areas to promote a new kind of nationalist movement.
Based on these activities, the socialist movement in the area of Mungyeong was followed by various forms of nationalist liberation movements such as Yecheica by the Chosun Communist Party and the Korea Communist Youth Society, the Peasants’ Movement, the Labor Movement, the Youth Movement, and the Social Equality Movement. Confucian scholars were at the center of the socialist movement in this area, fostering socialists to lead the next generation using the medium of regional development. It can be said that they tried to alleviate the pain of their time with the destruction of traditions and authority by replacing Confucianism with socialism, and to practice new ideals in the form of the nationalist liberation movement based on socialism.

이 글은 문경지역의 민족운동을 1920년대 사회주의운동을 중심으로 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 1920년대 사회운동단체의 결성과 초기 활동 그리고 사상단체의 출현, 그리고 사회주의사상을 유입한 사상단체의 활동으로 문경지역 사회운동단체의 성격 변화와 운동양상을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 1920년대 문경지역 민족운동의 성격을 정리하였다.
사회주의는 우리 역사에서 가장 암울했던 식민지시기에 민족해방ㆍ계급해방, 나아가 인간해방을 약속하는 이념으로 이 땅에 모습을 드러냈다. 한국에 사회주의가 수용되고, 변화해가는 과정에서 그것은 아무런 여과장치 없이 지방으로 확산되어 갔다. 문경을 비롯한 경북북부지역은 비교적 한국 사회주의운동이 빨리 흡수된 곳이며, 일정한 역할을 담당하였다. 즉, 한국사회주의 각 계파의 이론적인 틀을 정리하는 실험장이었던 것이다. 그리고 이 지역에서 성장한 사회주의자들을 공급받아 새로운 형태의 민족운동을 추진해 나갔던 것이다.
이를 바탕으로 문경지역의 사회주의운동은 조선공산당과 고려공산청년회 야체이카, 농민운동, 노동운동, 청년운동, 형평운동 등 다양한 형태의 민족해방운동으로 이어져 나갔다. 이 지역 사회주의운동의 중심에는 유학적 지식인들이 서 있었고, 그들은 지역적인 기반을 매개로 다음 세대를 이끌어갈 사회주의자들을 양성해 나갔던 것이다. 어쩌면 이들은 전통과 권위가 허물어져 가는 당시의 시대적인 아픔을 유교를 대신해 사회주의라는 새로운 이론으로 달래고자 했을 것이다. 그리고 새로운 이상향의 실천을 사회주의의 민족해방운동으로 표출하고자 했던 것이다.
