Dasan’s gyeong-hak intended to abolish Igi philosophy, the basis of Confucianism and by utilizing the world view of Catholic doctrines from a new perspective and propose his own independent interpretation of scriptures as ‘Shitian-Xue’. In his ‘Shitian-Xue’ based interpretation of Confucian scriptures he suggested an interpretation based on the personified God regarding the concept of funeral rites. He also focused on the conflict between the human mind and the moral mind from the concept of mind, arguing for the Theory of Human Nature wherein it is believed that human beings are innately good. Furthermore, he construed that virtue is not embedded in one’s mind but built through one’s intention and decisions based on free will.
Through the influence of Catholic doctrines, Dasan shed a new light to the Confucian scriptures, overcoming gyeong-hak, based on the doctrine of righteousness, of Confucianism and proposed ‘Shitian-Xue’ which revitalized the innate religious consciousness of Confucianism. Dasan’s use of Catholic world view to shed a new light to ‘Shitian-Xue’ in the gyeon-hak of Dasan is an important step that opened a new world for the study of Confucian scriptures. Furthermore, by bringing in the influence of Catholic doctrines to the interpretation of Confucian scripts, Dasan had opened the door for the mutual understanding of Oriental and Western philosophy.
