??This paper aims at disclosing the structural similarity of the ways of descriptions on Whitehead’s ‘Categoreal Scheme’ and Vasubandhu’s ?layavijn?na. Comparing these two ways of thinking, this paper focuses on how they explain the continuity of the reality or human consciousness. Whitehead shows us a series of trichotomous concepts specially on ‘Categoreal Scheme’ in Process and Reality. This paper analyzes that the 27 categories of the Categories of Explanation are based on the Category of the Ultimate having a trichotomous structure. Whitehead’s strategy utilizing a trichotomous structure of concepts like one, many, creativity purposes to show an dynamic changing aspects of reality. He tries to overcome the limitation of the dichotomous language usage by this strategy. Vasubandhu also utilizes a trichotomous concepts like ?laya-vijn?na, manas, vi?aya-vijnapti in order to disclose the characteristics of consciousness that is ceaseless changing. His method of using the trichotomous concepts succeeds in a Buddhist tradition to utilize a trichotomous structure of concepts found in 18 dh?tu, nam?-r?pa and vijn?na, etc. The analysis of these two works shows us that Whitehead and Vasubandhu understood well that the reality should be explained in a balanced way by human senses on the reality which perceive it dynamic changing, or capture it with a static concept.
