??Anxiety of life or existential anxiety which lies in unconsciousness is a dominant atmosphere in Kafka’s literature. It is very important element for the understanding of his whole works. Where does anxiety come from? This paper tries to find its clue in his short stories and parables.
??Why does Kafka feel a sense of despair? As a main cause the so-called ‘failure of escape’ can be mentioned. Yet it is not the only cause of despair. When does a human feel a sense of despair? This question essentially makes us think the problem of hope. Those who ambiguously wait for someone cannot be psychologically free from any anxiety. During the time of waiting he/she feels impatient and nervous because of anxiety about whether or not the object arrives due at the expected time. If the long-waited person has not come those who have waited for can be confronted by a deep sense of despair.
??Likewise diaspora Jewish people have waited for the coming of Messiah in their long history. However, none of them assure that the coming of Messiah has been realized in a historical horizon. The Messiah has not come due at the expected time. In most cases the expected time was a very difficult time when the Jewish people had confronted with. But in the time when they cried for the coming of Messiah, he had not come. So the Jewish people steadied their mind and faith, and longed for the coming of Messiah again. For example, the Safed Kabblah mystics believed, based on a passage in the Zohar, that if one community lived a life of holiness, the Messiah would soon arrive.
??The delayed coming of Messiah in the Jewish history and traditions reminds us of Kafka’s statement as follows: “The Messiah will come only when he is no longer necessary; he will come only on the day after his arrival; he will come, not on the last day, but on the very last.” As a result, awaiting and its vanity are reflected in Kafka’s works such as 〈Before the law〉, 〈The Hunter Gracchus〉. For Kafka vanity of awaiting by the deferment and delay of the coming of Messiah causes a sense of despair.
