Wordsworth’s merit as a poet lies in his ability to lead readers to the sympathetic response to the suffering and delight of main characters by associating feeling with thought in the process of poetic development. Short poems of Lyrical Ballads have been assessed to be the good examples of his talent. But all the poems of the book are not worthy of the artistic achievement. In particular, “The Old Cumberland Beggar, a Description” seems to fail to represent the painful circumstances which the old beggar is facing and thus is not likely to draw the readers’ attention and sympathy. This paper aims to identify the cause of such an unsatisfactory figuration of the old beggar by comparing it with the way that similar cases in other poems are dealt with and investigate the relationship between social criticism and poetic truth in Wordsworth’s poetry.
