The secularization debate has once again put a spotlight since some scholars such as Peter Berger had declared ‘the de-secularization of the world’. Nowadays a few scholars including Roland Robertson, Jose Casanova and Peter Beyer are participating in this debate in the perspective of globalization theory.
First of all, globalization theorists emphasize that it is needed to consider the global context in order to understand religion properly today. They criticise secularization theorists, especially decline theorists, since they had made the fallacy of over-generalization by jumping to conclusions with examples of Europe and North America.
The more important thing, they insist, is the fact that the relation between religion and society is not hostile. Raising an objection against secularization theories including de-secularization theory which assume zero-sum relationship between religion and society, globalization theorists claim that secularization and the global resurgence of religion represent two sides of the same coin. Therefore they insist we should think of the secularization-desecularization problem as itself being transcended and subsumed.
In this context, for the purpose of investigating the active role of religion in the global society, globalization theorists are carrying out researches on religious congregations such as pentecostalism and charismatic movements, which are growing and expanding rapidly all over the world as concrete examples of ‘glocalization’.
