The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between three male characters and the only female character named Miranda in The Tempest. The interpretation of The Tempest over the past decade has mainly focused on the question of Prospero’s masculine control depending on the psychoanalytic and the new historicist approach. However, this study tries to illuminate the active role of Miranda based on the analytical psychology of Carl Gustave Jung. According to his individuation theory, Miranda follows three stages: the meeting of her shadow through Caliban, the combination of the animus through Ferdinand, and the learning from the Old Wise Man through Prospero. After experiencing the three steps, Miranda will become a strong and active character in the brave new world rather than a passive one under the patriarchal society.
