The recent post-colonial criticism of Shakespeare's The Tempest has been focusing on European Prospero's cultural and racial "Other," Caliban, and reinterpreting the relation between the colonizer and the colonized from the point of view of the latter, The post-colonial criticism reversed the traditional critical tendency which had been exclusively concentrating on the former as an examplar of universal human value transcending time and place.
The purpose of this paper, however, is to investigate the discourse of sexuality. There are certain aspects of the race, class, and sexuality relations and the ideology in which these relations are encoded, and the political strategy to maintain or to regain power and authority through patriarchal oppression and domination of the women who are marginalized and colonialized to the position of the Other. They are dealt with as property or the object of desire because the male dominant society has placed value on their virginity as a gift exchanged to the benefit of men or withheld from the threat of rape. In this sense, all the other silent and non-existent women as well as Miranda share with the colonized the same experience of the politics of oppression and repression, and losing their voice, are forced to be silenced. On the other hand, Prospero is haunted by the nightmare, or fear of women's impurity.
Nevertheless, this play casts light on the vision of Utopia articulated by Gonzalo. He reveals the dream of an anti hierarchical and equal society. Fragile as it may be, it still has its own value because it points to a world of equality and cooperation.
