The purpose of this study was to investigate the population of Beopmulyamyeon, Danseonghyeon and the changing patterns of Boins.
The census register records tell that the population of Beopmulyamyeon, Danseonghyeon in the 18th century was 1,700~1,900. The actual population size was bigger than that because there were men not registered in the census register due to military service.
The military service population of Beopmulyamyeon was the largest in the former half of the 18th century, made a rapid downturn in the middle 18th century, and then gradually recovered. The number of military men was the biggest in the early 18th century because of the central government’s intention to secure them and the local Yeongjin’s continued efforts to increase the local force apart from the central government’s prohibition of Samosok. As the national policy of recruiting a set number of military men was carried out in the census register, the number of military men dropped in the middle 18th century. The ups and downs in the number of military men in the latter half of the century were in line with those of Boins. The variations in their size were greater than those of the regular military according to the national policies throughout the 18th century and served as a mechanism to change one’s social status.
