Since the Korean taught in homes and abroad mostly comprises instruction on Korean as a foreign language for adults, instruction on Korean as a second language for children is facing problems such as lack of teachers, textbooks and teaching methodologies.
In multicultural families, many serious problems related to language, culture, school education, identity etc., have been observed in children as well as married migrant women. Therefore, there is an urgent need for them to increase their competence in Korean culture so that they can adapt to Korea society and be successfully integrated into the community.
This study proposes developing textbooks aimed at multicultural families using Korean folk-tales so that married migrant women and their preschool children can learn Korean together. For this, I analyzed textbooks targeted at the aforementioned readership and reviewed research on using folk-tales to develop materials for educational instruction.
The Korean textbook used in this study contains six Korean folk tales(including "The fairy and the woodcutter"). They are based on several selection criteria which are proposed in advanced researches and are considered preschool children who will learn traditional Korean folk-tale in elementary school. Each folk tale has a theme, and using this theme, tasks are systematically and effectively designed to test one"s vocabulary, sentence patterns, writing skills, knowledge of culture, etc.
