The low-end torque (LET) in a 2.2L passenger diesel engine was improved by optimized EMS calibration and simple design change in this study. In order to improve LET, the air fuel mixing must be improved because air fuel ratio at 1000rpm full load is quite rich resulting in heavy smoke whereas swirl level and injection pressure is relatively low. When swirl level was increased by closing swirl flap, it was found that LET can be improved by 2.2% and smoke reduced by 83%. The quite earlier and larger quantity of pilot injection compared with conventional injection strategy was found to improve LET by up to 2.8% and reduce smoke by 58%. The injector tip protrusion was also found to be important design factor for LET, and 1.5% more torque and 52% less smoke was obtained when 0.2mm of injector tip protrusion was decreased. By combining these effects, the final results showed 6~10% improvement in torque by additional fueling within smoke guideline. But, the 10% torque improvement accompanied 3.8times higher THC emission and 6% higher combustion noise. The current achievable torque improvement was found to be 6% without any additional design change and more validations.
