In the 1960s, the colonial order of the global dimension symbolized by the United States and the oppressive ideology of anti-communism was intensified. As known through the incident of Bun-ji Writing indictment, during this period Nam Jeong-hyeon aroused tensions in literature and reality through a variety of techniques and subject matter, and took a leading position as resistance writer in the literary history.
Thing to note is that the subject to his resistance is well known not the empire symbolized by the United States, rather than a so-called state power symbolized by outside forces. He reveals a strong reluctant to the consciousness of the colonial subject accepting the western culture blindly and a national ideology forcing and agitating. He understand it as the United States-led re-colonization process. In his novels the subjects are extremely helpless beings.
They are described as a subject want to marry Americans for men who do not have the economic ability, characters resent the fact that their pupil colors are different from that of Americans, and subjects tear and blow their empty hand in the air when they suffer unfair things.
The author constantly emphasizes that the colonial era anti-communist ideology comes from the political project. “Hyunjang” and “Kisangdo” show the specific aspects of violence and threat with the anti-communist discipline societies, and the writer calls a ‘nation’ as a means of resistance to the reality. The nation employed at that time can be summarized as a kind of resistance ethics to the reality. It is the power of the creative principle through the writing style of overturn against the order of real ideological oppression. He testifies the historical events and attempts to overturn these reality through the form of a novel.
