The Imjin-War is the war between Japan and Korea in the 1590s, which Toyotomi-Hideyoshi, the chief adviser to Japan led into. In the imperial age of Japan(1910~1945), the memory about this war was made good use of for the expansion of the Japanese Empire. After 1945, under the system of the Peaceful Constitution, the memory seemed to be forgotten. However, oblivion does not necessarily endorse the misconception that the Japanese used to have about the Koreans in the imperial age. Despite the fact that many Korean dramas are in fashion in Japan, it seems that even now there is still a lack of realistic understanding about Korea in Japanese discourse space.
In this paper, I will explore “Chosen Nichinichi-ki(The Diary of Korea),” which is evaluated as the most conscientious work by Japanese in terms of its discourse about Imjjin-War, as well as its analysis of the understanding and representation of Korea. Moreover, for comparison with this one, I will introduce a modern novel “Mingan Taikoki” by Oda-Makoto and analyze the problem at hand.
