This article aims to formulate some remarks on the perception of the afterlife as it was conceived by the people of Goguryo. Although several researches have already been accomplished on this subject, these studies have been based mostly on the analysis and evolution of the themes depicted in the tombs from a religious standpoint, which has often limited the range of investigation to Taoism and Buddhism. In this article, through a much more philosophical approach to the eschatological vision in the Kingdom of Goguryo, we will try to compare the reaction to the phenomenon of death in its society with that in other cultures, analyzing both the Historical sources and the iconographical panorama found in the wall paintings of Goguryo. Even if their respective conceptions of the hereafter show us some profound differences, this analysis can finally stimulate some useful questions and hopefully provide some answers about the existence of a sheer iconography of death, of the concept of evil and of the netherworld. The features of the environment where Goguryo people lived strongly influenced their lifestyle and their religious and philosophical views: this article will thus try to investigate how that process took place.
