The Korean Church has a centennial history of missions that is a unique and extraordinary phenomenon in the two thousand years of church history. From the beginning the Korean Church has had the identity of a missionary church. It is a meaningful endeavor to study the one hundred years of mission of the Korean Presbyterian Church.
This article will examine the mission theology of the representative Korean Presbyterian churches: namely, PCK, PROK, GAPCK (Hapdong, the General Assembly of Presbyterian Church in Korea), and KOSIN (Presbyterian Church in Korea). This comparative study is limited in its scope in that there are even more numerous Presbyterian denominations in Korea. Furthermore, it is a topic that is difficult to explore because each church has a long history of mission theology and practice. That is why this article will focus on the model or pattern of the mission theology.
The aim of this article is to find out the mission theology that is based on actual mission practices and to help Korean Churches understand the main characteristics of their missiology and mission practice. The main questions addressed in this article are: sociopolitical concerns, Church"s evangelistic and pastoral ministries, inculturation, and faithfulness to the Christian tradition.
To put it simply, it has been found that: GAPCK and KOSIN have mission as saving souls and extending churches PCK has holistic mission and PROK has mission as commitment to liberation and transformation. The study addresses the important topic of how the Korean Presbyterian Churches can implement and participate in the mission of the triune God.
