The purpose of this study was to increase the understanding of optimism displayed by young children, and its relationship with the usage of mental state terms and with the development of the story structure by the age. To carry out the purpose, a total of 136 young children (81 children aged 3 and 55 children aged 5) in two kindergartens located in D city were interviewed on several aspects. The optimism, usage of terms for mental state and story structure concept development were measured by using the tools developed by Lockhart, Chang and Story(2002), Mental State Terms List developed by Song(2007), Story Structure Concept Development Level categorized by Lee and Park(1992) respectively. The data were analyzed by One-way, and Two-way ANOVAs.
The results of this study were as follows. First, the optimism development by age in young children, was shown to be higher in younger children than that of older children. Second, the higher the optimism development of young children, the higher the average score for use of terms for mental state. In comparison with the same level of optimism development, the older the children are, the higher the average score of using such terms also found. Third, as a result of examining the differences of story structure concept development in accordance with optimism level and age, all optimism level and age factors showed significant differences in story structure concept development. The higher the optimism development of young children, the higher the story structure concept development level was. Likewise, as for the same level of optimism development in young children, the higher the age, the higher the average level of story structure concept development was.
