Secondary students suddenly face more difficulties reading academic subject texts because materials in secondary school were changed from fiction to non-fiction text as well as from everyday language to academic language. However, the analysis of language itself, such as the forms and functions, contributes to help language learners regardless of a native or non-native understand the content of subject area texts and enhance their language proficiency. Thematic analysis is useful for students’ independent reading because analyzing theme and rheme in a clause, regardless of the genre, is a good strategy to understand the contents. In order to examine how to analyze thematic patterns and differentiate genres of texts, three kinds of sample texts were adapted and explored. The frequency of human participants is very high, and the topical themes in the narrative contain a lot of specific participants and short, pronominalized nouns. In the text 1, which contains 72 lexical words in 28 non-embedded clauses, yields a lexical density of 2.6. the text 2 includes 119 lexical words in 28 non-embedded clauses and yields a lexical density of 4.26. Finally, the text 3 with 117 lexical words in 22 non-embedded clauses yields a lexical density of 5.3. This article suggests that the thematic analysis will be a tool for ESL/EFL learners to understand the meaning of academic texts and to develop academic writing skills.
