The dictionary definition of "kkini" is sort of meal on daily routine basis, such as breakfast, lunch, or dinner. However, "kkini" is somehow confined to a certain meaning combined with the verb having/skipping (a meal) semantically, but also features the devoid of usage for a square meal pragmatically. In that sense, "kkini" itself is a symbol of deficiency and of inefficiency.
They would not describe the ordinary meals at the early stage of Korean modern literature. While food was a subject of ascetic manners under the influence of Enlightenment, tobacco or coffee, items of personal preference was introduced to present the personal anguish. The main issue of "kkini" arose in earnest in the mid 1920s. The poem "Baeksooeui Tanshik(Moan of a Jobless)"of Kim Ki-jin and "Talchulgi(An account of escape)"of Choi Seo-hea showed how the subconsciousness of "kkini" panned out. The unconsciousness of "kkini" bleared the boundaries between the edibles and the non-edibles, and moreover, dispersed the distinctions between human beings and the animals. And additionally, it relativized the existing laws and morals, and questioned the social agreement of which the food should be exchanged with the currency.
The subconsciousness "kkini" has affected the acceptance of the materialistic literature theories and it has been working subtly to understand the super/sub structure theory and to prescribe the class consciousness of the proletariat. In addition, "kkini" is the socialist autonomous foundation and a condition bringing the crisis to the socialism. The novels of Choi Seo-hea brought up the questions how the problems of "kkini" should be resolved until the revolution would be accomplished. Thus, the subconsciousness encompassing "kkini" was to be the materialism of materialism which the Korean literature of 1920s comprehended.
