While attention is typically understood as an individual’s cognitive activity in second language acquisition (SLA) research, it is conceived as publicly visible, sequentially traceable, and interactionally constituted as a two-party phenomenon in a micro-interactional approach. By drawing on this interactional view of attention, this paper explores how attention comes into play in second language (L2) interaction by examining a segment containing a negotiation event. The data segment was drawn from a one hour long conversation between a native speaker and a non-native speaker of English. Analysis results suggest that the learner attends to the local context where an unknown word is situated, and, more importantly, that her major attention is not merely given to her lack of lexical knowledge but to resolving a communicative breakdown. How a fine-detailed analysis of participants’ conduct in interaction can supplement our understanding of attention in L2 interaction will be discussed.
