Jeong Yak-yong(丁若鏞;1762~1836) valued the concept of ‘virtuous politics,’ based on ethics and morals, but he was worried that an overemphasis upon these ethics could lead to social disorder. He especially feared those who were incapable of virtuous behavior, i.e. narrow-minded women as well as the large majority of commoners, who either ‘imagined’ themselves as persons capable of acting in a morally sound way, or were just confused between petty anger and righteous wrath. In Dasan’s mind, it was them who posed a definite threat to social order. He was concerned about situations in which private anger or individual grudges could be easily decorated as virtue and ethics, and transform too swiftly into justified violence.
Through the increasing overemphasis upon virtue and morality throughout the society in the latter half period of the Joseon dynasty, the number of violent actions committed in the name of justice was higher than ever. There were too many commoners and women who easily called for revenge in the name of virtue and moral. Dasan believed that the majority of the people who claimed justice for themselves were not even capable of differentiating justice from trivial anger. Dasan considered this to be a danger to the stability of society, and thus called for a strict regulation of violences which unwarrantedly claimed to be just.
The abundance of cases of indiscriminate revenge, the increase of suicides committed as reactions to petty verbal insults or humiliations, as well as the Joseon government’s efforts to view and assess these as ‘just’ acts of violence or ‘virtuous’ deaths, all unfolded during the latter half period of the Joseon dynasty, and were harshly criticized by Dasan Jeong Yak-yong.
