The Bronze Age culture of the GyeongGi Bay area has not been studied much. However, the Bronze Age culture of the area has been exposed by recent salvage excavations. Contemporarily, a number of sites were excavated and studied. The number of settlements and artifacts were able to provide primary information about the Bronze Age cultures in the GyeongGi Bay area.
Bronze Age settlements, in general, were located in the upper area of the hill which was lower than 100m sea level. Various types of settlements have been found at the GyeongGi Bay area: elongated-rectangular shapes, rectangular shapes, square shapes, trapezoid shapes, and roundish shapes. Elongatedrectangular shapes and rectangular shapes were the most common. Roundish and trapezoid shapes were relatively lesser in number and were possibly used as temporary camps or storage houses.
Settlements were also located near water sources such as streams and lakes. Elongated-rectangular settlements were landmark styles of early Bronze Age culture in this area.
Settlements produced potteries, projectile points, half moon-shaped knives, spears, and hatchets that were possibly used for both hunting and cultivating. The absolute dating of those sites indicated they existed around 1200 B.C. The settlement system and attributions of those artifacts also support the dating results.
This data provided us primary information about the environmental setting and food production strategy. However, the functional and structural relationships between settlements and dolmen have not been studied enough. Further research will provide better understanding of the Bronze Age culture of the GyeongGi Bay area.
