This research investigated the causality between English learning self-efficacy and achievement goal orientation for the Korean secondary school students, using the analysis of autoregressive cross-lagged model. Achievement goal orientation was divided into a 2x2 framework of mastery approach, mastery avoidance, performance approach, and performance avoidance. English learning self-efficacy and achievement goal orientation of the secondary school students were collected from their 3-year-longitudinal data of the Korean Educational Longitudinal Survey. Students were measured 3 times when they were in the second year of middle school, then again the third year, and the first year of the high school. The result was that English learning self-efficacy predicted both mastery approach and performance approach positively. Only mastery approach increased English learning self-efficacy positively. English learning self-efficacy did not affect mastery avoidance. However, mastery avoidance decreased English learning self-efficacy. Also, English learning self-efficacy did not influence mastery avoidance and performance avoidance. As a result, English learning self-efficacy can precede the concept of achievement goal orientation. It was inferred that we must provide students with English learning classroom environment that has more mastery approach and less mastery avoidance as much as possible to facilitate English learning self-efficacy.
