The study investigated grammaticization procedures ofa subject in English sentences by Korean learners. The participants of the study were composed of 204 students at middle schools, 221 at high schools, and 75 at a university in Seoul. They were asked to translate Korean sentences into English. As early asserted by Li & Thompson (1976) and Givon (1979), the results showed a typical development pattern from pragmatic topic-oriented structure to syntactic subject-oriented structure. Moreover, interestingly, it was found that the confusion about the status of a topic in Korean and a subject in English syntax still remained confusing for Korean learners until the age of college education. This finding implies that topic-prominence in Korean language persistently interrupted learners’ composition processing of English sentences and that the distinctive status of a subject in English needs to be learned through special treatment in order to expedite grammaticization by Korean learners. Finally, the study concludes that in order to reduce the drifting period with topic-prominent structures in Korean and accelerate the acquisition of subject-prominent structures in English, revision in teaching curriculum are critical for Korean learners.
