This paper emphasized the importance of training for teachers, which is currently not available in Korean language education. One suggestion was to introduce mandatory training for those receiving promotion. An important factor determining the quality of Korean language education is the qualifications of teaching staff. Mandatory training must be completed by teachers, in order to achieve greater professionalism and to standardize the different policies of institutions. Training may be conducted in the form of classroom sessions or mixed with web-based lectures. Subjects for training are Korean language policy, understanding of other cultures, and foreign language studies. Upon receiving qualification, teachers should undergo training even in familiar subjects to become aware of the latest trends. It will be useful to offer classes on demand at an official training center. By implementing the training system, we can expect the following three effects. First, the quality of education can be improved. Second, the various methods of Korean language teaching can be standardized and integrated. Third, teachers will be able to gain more confidence. However, the suggestions in this paper are limited in that they cannot be immediately reflected in policies, both under development and in practice, that are related to teacher qualification and promotion.
