In every corner of the world, physically disabled people can be found, and a fair amount of information on their daily lives is exposed through the mass media. Yet, it is particularly difficult to come across any depiction of disabled people’s everyday lives in the North Korean mass media. The only type of disabled people whose lives are displayed through the media is the people who fall under the category of ‘honorable veterans’. An ‘honorable veteran’ refers to “a person who receives special benefits from the government because of their physical injuries incurred during their military service.” This group of disabled people frequently appears in North Korean magazines and TV shows as a hero/main character of a story.
The main reason behind the frequent appearance of ‘honorable veterans’ in the mass media, unlike the other types of disabled people, lies in the existing structure of social discourse, which supports the belief system that it is only natural for the government to be responsible for their lives and treat them with respect. Under this framework of social discourse, a role of women is extremely crucial because women are the ones who devote their lives to respecting and taking care of ‘honorable veterans.’
The main purpose of this research is to study the characteristics of the social discourse framework by examining stories about a relationship between ‘honorable veterans’ and women who are committed to taking care them. These stories are selected from a state-owned magazine called “Choson Neosung(Women in North Korea).” “Choson Neosung,” which targets a female audience, is employed as a primary source for this research because women are always portrayed as a nurturing figure for ‘honorable veterans’ with no exception.
This paper examines twenty-two articles from “Choson Neosung,” in which a plot is developed around the daily lives of ‘honorable veterans.’ Out of the twenty-two, four stories were published during the 1960s, and the rest of the articles were published after 1990. There is no clear distinction between the stories published during the 1960s and the stories published in the 1990s when an ‘honorable veteran’ is a male in the story. Regardless of time, male ‘honorable veterans’ are looked after women of various occupation, social status, and relationship including his wife. This, however, does not apply to a case where an ‘honorable veteran’ is a female. In such case, the plot development becomes completely different between the stories published in the 1960s and the ones published in the 1990s. In a story published in the 1960s, for example, a female ‘honorable veteran’ with a broken arm marries a well-respected man and she receives care from her husband even when she becomes a cripple later in her marriage. However, there is no reference to family and/or marriage life of a female ‘honorable veteran’ in the stories published in the 1990s. Instead, female ‘honorable veterans’ are nurtured by other women dispatched from female associations run by the government. Then, it is important to raise a reasonable doubt that the North Korean regime has been attempting to solve the veteran issue through the ‘great sacrifice’ of women.
