Unyoungheon and Youngyoungjeon are typical romance stories about court ladies in the 17th century. The purpose of this article is to study love and sexuality in storytelling narratives based on these two stories and considers the message and value of their storytelling.
These days, storytelling in ancient novels would be valuable to representatives of various media as an original art given the current huge market for film, literature and television. According to this view, it would be possible to figure out the character of Unyoungheon and Youngyoungjeon in three ways.
First, an image of the palace as a special place with a beautiful atmosphere creates a fantasy mood as does the moment of meeting between the ideal couple when they fall in love.
Second, they realized their love even though their love was forbidden. The stories reflected the great power of love and universality through and beyond their era.
Third, an expectation of a happy ending is reflected in the stories. This concept, that shows their love can only be realized in heaven not reality, is a reflection of people’s hopes.
Nowadays, the development of the media industry has led to a great demand for storytelling material. In this time, the trends of storytelling about love affairs between a court lady and a nobleman are still influential and its value could be appreciated by approaching it through a new viewpoint.
