For Sigmund Freud, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is perceived as a certain form of neurosis along with hysteria. OCD in particular plays an important role in psychoanalytic clinics. In its common symptoms, one’s psychological struggle may cause a kind of obsession which is willing to do something that one does not even want. Also, its common symptoms are usually based on one’s obsessive doubt and guilty conscience, which not only limits one’s thought and behavior, but also heavily influences one’s way of thinking.
Those who suffer from OCD consider their work more importantly than their relationship with others, and regulations and systems than human psychology and mind. Striving for perfection, they tend to be overly strict and meticulous to the point where they hurt people around them. These symptoms of OCD also appear in Christians. Christians with OCD are captivated by external dogmas, rather than being driven by the essential value of Christian faith. There is no peaceful worthiness of themselves in their faith. Only the restless desire for legalistic perfection and growth is the core driving force in their faith journey. Hence, it is difficult to see Jesus Christ’s peace and compassion in them, but a form of competitiveness derived from their obsessive intolerance. In this respect, the study of OCD can help us Christians to reflect ourselves and possibly to repent our way of living which requires healing.
In this paper, the author looks at clinical characteristics and defense mechanism of OCD from the perspective of psychoanalysis and its causes from the perspective of education. The author scrutinizes the psychological world of the Christian with OCD in relation to religious-spiritual issues. The author then suggests how they can be healed from the perspectives of psychoanalytic treatment and spiritual counseling. In conclusion, the author assesses the main argument of this paper and proposes further studies on this topic.
